Worst remakes of good films
|
I'll start with
1. The Birdcage pedestian and unfunny version of the brilliant La Cage aux Folles
2.The Ladykillers One of the worst film I have seen based on the great Ealing production of the same name.
2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Johny Depp' in an appallingly pretentious version of the original

Good to see the Swiss Walter Mitty, making a tit of himself as per usual

If you make a film based on a play or novel then it's an adaptation (eg Yojimbo, West Side Story). If you make a film based on another film and use the same shots but change the costumes and setting then it's a remake.
It's not worth arguing semantics over this in any case. Let's go on to why a self proclaimed expert on film such as yourself somehow got the idea that Steve McQueen was in A FISTFUL of dollars. Hmmm?

I disagree. It's like saying West Side Story is a remake of Romeo and Juliet.

Yeah, there's a difference between being inspired by something and just copying it. Kurosawa's Ran was inspired by King Lear as well as the story of a notoriously brutal Japanese daimyo, but there were so many original elements that it was far more than a remake of anything.

Swiss, as usual you're being an utter cunt, and completely wrong as well.
Yojimbo was an adaptation of a novel, taking the basic plot and some characters but making a new story from it. FISTFUL of dollars was a remake of Kurosawa's film but with a different setting and costumes. If you actually see both films side by side you can see that Leone stole loads of shots, not just the storyline. Watching a montage of some of these shots you can see exactly why Leone's film was sued and why they won $100k plus 15% of the revenue.

I suppose the greatest film of all time, Kurosawa's Ran was a remake then. It was based on Shakespeare's King Lear,
Another great Kurosawa film Throne of Blood was lifted from MacBeth.
Neither of these works qualify as a shit remake, both were masterpieces by the great Sensei.
BTW Throne of Blood starred Toshiro Mifune for whom I believe Far Cough might have expressed an admiration.

Indeed as is Fist Full of Dollars. However that is not a remake but an adaptation. Unless Steve McQueen et al were dressed as Samurai.
A simple mistake for a non Film and Media educated person.

Nagel, yeah I knew Yojimbo was based on something but wasn't sure what it was
By the way, I'm a huge Toshiro Mifune fan and by connection, Kurosawa also

Yojimbo wasn't a remake, but it did pretty much nick the storyline from Dashiell Hammett's 1920's novel Red Harvest, so it's a bit rich that the Yojimbo producers sued the makers of A Fistful of Dollars (and won).
There was another remake of it done in the 90s - Last Man Standing - with Bruce Willis, which was a prohibition era gangster version.

The Magnificent Seven was already based on something else, so the original isnt actually original.
I actually thought Papillion remake was quite good, and I rate the original as one of my favourite films.

Fistful of Dollars was a decent remake of Yojimbo, which might have been a remake of something earlier?

Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is an excellent shout. Though August Gloop was even more stereotypically German which was amusing.
Diabolique is another horrendous remake.

It's not a bad film actually, although of course it's not as good as the original, but they did a good job and it's enjoyable enough.
I didn't think The Italian Job remake was a bad film but as a remake it was on a hiding to nothing. If it had been just released as a heist movie with Mark Wahlberg with no connection at all to The Italian Job then it would have been decent enough.
